Definition:

Employee turnover refers to the  number of employees who leave an organization during a specified period, this is usually one year. Whilst an organization mostly measures the total number of employees who leave, turnover also applies to subcategories within an organization like individual departments or demographic groups. 

What are the causes of employee turnover?

There are various reasons why employees leave an organization, and whilst  some reasons for turnover are negative, some turnover is expected.  The problem really begins when the turnover happens due to negative reasons and also in an instance where it happens at an unexpected rate. Below are some the common reasons why turnover occurs: 

  • Negative feelings towards senior management 
  • Feeling burnout 
  • Lack of career progression
  • Discrimination
  • Lack of work-life balance 

Having an understanding of what causes employee turnover can help employers to make the necessary adjustments, in order to maintain a positive working environment.
