Definition:

An Independent Contractor is an individual who has been hired by an organization to perform a particular service or task. 

The contractor, contrary to an employee, is paid by issuing an invoice to the organization, rather than being paid a wage through the human resources department. Organisations hire independent contractors to perform various tasks such as: health and safety compliance, redundancy meetings and procedures, tax calculations and many more; most independent contractors are specialists in their areas, and therefore organizations tend to hire such specialists to bring a change in the organization.
