Leadership development involves the development of the skills and the abilities of leaders; in this instance, the development of leaders within the organization. 

The main aim of leadership development is to ensure that employees within the organization are equipped and ready as future leaders; this is seen as a common process in succession planning, which has the aim to produce high performing leaders who will eventually take on senior management positions when there is a vacancy.
