Definition:

A position is a role within the organization, which is allocated a particular set of tasks or accountabilities. 

A position is usually defined by a full-time equivalent number, which is most useful for budget and resource allocation planning, (e.g. a position requiring someone to work half-days may be planned and advertised as 0.5 FTE).
