Reskilling

[ˌri:ˈskɪlɪŋ]
Definition:

Reskilling refers to training employees on a new set of skills in order to prepare them to take on a different role within the organization; this usually happens when an employee’s previous job responsibilities become irrelevant, often due to an advancement in technology.

Organizations do carry out this because an employee may fit well in a team and have a marketplace or knowledge of the organization which might be difficult to replace. Another reason employers might reskill, is in order to keep the employee and avoid laying them off. Reskilling may involve acquiring certification or education in a different area of expertise or a different skill.
